MnDOT to host Hwy 197 Bemidji public open house Oct. 23
BEMIDJI, Minn. —The Minnesota Department of Transportation will host a public open house to discuss improvements planned for Hwy 197 in Bemidji on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the MnDOT Bemidji Headquarters, 3920 Hwy 2 West. Two sessions are available: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Each session will include a brief presentation and time for questions and discussion with project staff. Participants can learn more about the project layout, traffic impacts, business access, and an estimated construction schedule.
Between MnDOT and the City of Bemidji, six roundabouts are planned for construction between 2025 and 2027. MnDOT’s portion includes roundabouts on Hwy 197 to replace the signalized intersections at Hannah Avenue, Middle School Drive, and the Menards intersection.
The project also includes improved pedestrian facilities with a 10-foot multi-use trail on both sides of the Hwy, upgraded corridor lighting, realignment of Gillette Drive Northwest, and turn-lane improvements.
Construction is planned in three phases during the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons. Phase one, from Gillette Drive Northwest to the Hwy 71 intersection, is scheduled for 2026. In 2027, Phase two will focus on Middle School Drive, followed by Phase 3 near Hannah Avenue.
