No travel advisory issued in northwest Minnesota

High winds and limited visibility create hazardous driving conditions

BEMIDJI, Minn. – (9:15 a.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises no travel on highways in northwestern Minnesota due to high winds causing blowing snow and zero visibility. The no travel advisory includes the following roads:

  • Highway 1- North Dakota border to Marshall/Pennington County Line
  • Highway 2- East Grand Forks to Crookston
  • Highway 9- Crookston to Borup
  • Highway 11- North Dakota to Karlstad
  • Highway 75- Perley to Canada
  • Highway 175- North Dakota to Hallock
  • Highway 200- Hwy 32 to North Dakota
  • Highway 220 – Climax to Hwy 11

No Travel Advised means that the visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel. Motorists are advised not to travel in these areas until the high winds subside and conditions improve.

Motorists should prepare for changing weather and monitor road conditions at 511mn.org. Drivers should plan accordingly with an emergency supply kit and clothing for extreme cold.

Motorists should use extreme caution when traveling as visibility remains reduced, particularly in open areas without windbreaks. Motorists are advised to slow down, drive for the conditions, and avoid stopping in traffic lanes if they encounter poor visibility. They should instead continue moving at a reduced speed or safely pull onto the shoulder if necessary. Stopping in the traffic lanes creates hazardous conditions for all travelers.
